NATIONWIDE PROTEST: INSPECTOR-GENERAL OF POLICE, WIKE SPEAK/ATIKU SENDS WARNING, BLASTS TINUBU’S GOVERNMENT.

The Nigeria Labour Congress has denied reports that it has withdrawn from the planned nationwide protest against economic hardship scheduled for August 1.

The NLC President, Joe Ajaero, said the union cannot withdraw from a protest that it did not organise.

This was contained in a Tuesday press release signed by Ajaero titled, ‘The Nigeria Labour Congress cannot withdraw from a protest that it did not organise.’

“A news report of the withdrawal of the Nigeria Labour Congress from the widely discussed national protest has been brought to our attention. The Nigeria Labour Congress debunks such a story as patently false.

“The truth is that the Nigeria Labour Congress cannot withdraw from a protest that it did not organise. It is only the organisers of the speculated national protest that can decide to pull out or continue with the protest,” Ajaero said.

Ajaero explained that the NLC has a structured decision-making process, which includes internal trade union mechanisms and leadership approval, that guides its industrial actions, such as protests, to ensure consideration before taking action.

“Yet, the fact that the Nigeria Labour Congress is not the body organising the protest does not mean that Organised Labour is oblivious of the dire living conditions Nigerians have been subjected to by the harsh economic policies of government,” he clarified.

He said the NLC is standing in solidarity with the Nigerian people in these “trying and excruciating times.”

Ajaero also called on President Bola Tinubu to invite the leaders of the protest movement to dialogue on their demands.

“Once again, we implore the Federal Government and the sub-national governments to listen to the cries of the Nigerian people and do the needful. After all, it is said that the voice of the people is the voice of God,” he said.

The planned protest has gained traction on social media, where it is trending under the hashtags ‘#EndBadGovernance,’ ‘#TinubuMustGo’ and ‘#Revolution2024.’

Court Orders INEC To Prosecute Governors, Deputies Over Election Violence

FG DECLARES END HIGH FUEL PRICES TARGET TO REDUCE FUEL PRICES TO N230 PER KILOGRAM.

The Nigerian government has announced that the era of high fuel prices is over, with the introduction of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) as a cost-effective and sustainable alternative fuel for transportation. The government plans to commission 30,000 CNG-powered vehicles within the next 90 days, with a long-term target of distributing one million conversion kits.

According to All Dew news report, Michael Oluwagbemi, Project Director and CEO of the Presidential Compressed Natural Gas Initiative, the government has purchased 30,000 conversion kits, valued at N1.2 million per vehicle, to be distributed for free nationwide. This initiative aims to promote the adoption of CNG and reduce fuel prices, which are currently ranging from N750 to N1000 per liter.

Oluwagbemi assured Nigerians that with the adoption of CNG, fuel prices would significantly decrease, stating that “the era of buying N750, N800, or N1,000 per liter fuel is over.” The government’s target is to reduce fuel prices to N230 per kilogram, making transportation more affordable for citizens. This initiative aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s directive to alleviate the impact of the recent fuel subsidy removal.”

Latest update on Nationwide protest

The Commissioner of Police in charge of the FCT, Benneth Igweh, has begged residents of Abuja not to join the planned nationwide protest, to prevent the destruction of new infrastructure recently put in place by the FCT administration and President Bola Tinubu.

Igwe made this appeal on Monday as the date for proposed protest against economic hardship in the country by unnamed groups draws near.

The CP also paraded the mastermind of the armed robbery gang that killed retired Brigadier General Uwen Harold Udokwerre in Abuja on June 22, 2024.

While speaking on the proposed strike, Igweh said, “Lions do not destroy their den. We have toiled so much to ensure and provide security for the FCT. In the cause of this, we have gone to Kaduna, we have gone to Kogi, we have gone to Nasarawa to fish out our criminals who came to disturb the peace of Abuja.

“In this process, we have lost officers. Last week we lost two officers, the previous week, we lost one officer over efforts at providing security and safeguarding residents. We don’t want to lose any more people.

“So please dont allow the destruction of what the minister, what Mr President is doing. We have been in this FCT, we know when there are changes, roads, infrastructure. I am pleading with residents, do not join this protest“We don’t want miscreants to come from outside the FCT to come and start destroying them. We will go back to square one where we were before. I plead, I beg of you, do not join this protest.

“Let us continue collectively to make FCT safe. Let them go and do what they want to do. But not with us. Act maturely. Act maturely. Act like people who appreciate. Even the loss we have been losing to ensure your safety. Use it to appreciate us. If you give it to us, we will be very happy. We will continue to provide security for you.”
