Report on nationwide protest

PROTEST: I HAVE THE VIDEO. THEY WANT TO KILL US, THEY WERE SHOOTING LIVE AMMUNITION AT US-PROTESTER.

A protester in Abuja has accused security agencies of using live ammunition on peaceful protesters.

There are reports that security agencies had used teargas to disperse the protesters in the nation’s federal capital territory, but speaking with newsmen, the protester said that the security agencies also fired ammunition at the protesters.

In the video which was shared by The Guardian on Friday, the protester whose name was not disclosed said that she has the video of the security agencies shooting live ammunition at them, and accused the security agencies of trying to kill them.

She said, “I have the video. They want to kill us. Live ammunition. They were shooting, they were shooting at us. The guy was on mufti. He wore black clothes. The guy came out from the bus where the anti-protesters came out and was shooting live (ammunition at us), while the police were at our back shooting teargas up and down. Why?

“What did we do? We did not go there with anything, and they are shooting at us. We have the video, we know them. We might not have seen their faces, but we know them.”

The #EndBadGovernanceInNigeria protest began on August 1 with Nigerians from different parts of the country storming the streets to demonstrate against hunger and economic challenges in the country.

The protesters said that they want the government to take urgent steps to address the challenges facing Nigerians

However, there are reports that the protest has taken a violent turn in some parts of the country.

Enough is Enough — Angry Protesters Declare As They Block Major Road Leading to Abuja

opera.com

In a significant display of public discontent, protesters blocked the Kaduna Road, a crucial highway in Niger State linking Kaduna to Abuja, on Monday. This preemptive action comes just three days before a planned 10-day nationwide protest aimed at demanding improvements in Nigeria’s economic situation according to Premium Times.

The demonstrators carried placards with powerful messages such as ‘We Are Not Slaves’, ‘Enough is Enough’, ‘Stop Anti-Masses Policies’, ‘Hardship Is Unbearable’, and ‘Fuel Subsidy Must Be Back’. Their chants of anti-government slogans underscored their unwillingness to wait until Thursday, the official start date for the broader protests organized by various groups.

The primary grievances driving these protests are the removal of petrol subsidies and the floating of the naira, policies introduced by President Bola Tinubu. These measures, while intended to stabilize the economy in the long run, have exacerbated the cost-of-living crisis in Nigeria. Since their implementation, food prices have more than doubled, making daily life increasingly difficult for the average Nigerian.

In response to the escalating tension, the government has engaged in extensive efforts to avert the protests. Meetings have been held with traditional rulers, clerics, and other influential groups in a bid to mitigate the unrest. Security agencies, including the police, the army, and the State Security Service, have also issued warnings about the potential for the protests to be hijacked by individuals intent on inciting violence.

Despite these efforts, the resolve of the protesters remains strong. Their demands include a reversal of the government’s economic policies and immediate measures to alleviate the widespread hardship. The protesters argue that the current policies disproportionately impact the poor and are unsustainable.

Kenneth Okonkwo Remains A Trusted Ally- Peter Obi

The presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP) in the 2023 election, Peter Obi, has said a spokesperson for the party, Kenneth Okonkwo, remains an ally despite the latter’s criticism of his leadership style.

Okonkwo had on Sunday, criticised Obi on his approach to party matters. Okonkwo, who joined the LP in 2022, accused Obi of failing to resolve the internal crisis rocking the party. According to the movie maker-turned-politician, Obi did not do enough to build the party and solve the party’s leadership crisis.

“Every member of the Labour Party is confused today as to the future of the Labour Party because of lack of leadership from PO over the party, and unfortunately, when they look up to me to tell them about PO’s standpoint, I sincerely have nothing to tell them because I don’t know myself,” he said in a letter posted on X.
